ArchivalResource

Letters and poems sent to John Cowper Powys, 1916-1946.

The collection comprises two series. Box 1 contains letters (arranged chronologically from 1916 to 1946) written (typescript and holograph) by Masters to his friend and fellow writer, John Cowper Powys. Box 2 contains poems (arranged chronologically from 1925 to 1942) written by Masters and sent to Powys. A few of the poems are published, printed versions; one is a holograph; but most are original or carbon typescripts, signed or initialed by Masters, some with holograph annotations. The correspondence is personal, largely having to do with comments about Masters's or Powys's writings, with many comments on reading, philosophical attitudes, and giving information regarding Masters's personal problems--marriage, love affairs, and relationships with other writers such as Dreiser, Mencken, and Arthur Ficke.

110 poems (303 leaves).
